KILOMBA IS A BRAZILIAN QUILOMBO IN THE UNITED STATES
Kilomba's name is a reference to the Quilombos, self-sustainable revolutionary communities that represent Black liberation and resistance, memory, radical love, and affection of Black Brazilians. The Quilombos were created by Black people who were kidnapped from Africa and brought to Brazil in the 17th century. Our vision is to build narratives that center the experiences of Black Brazilian Women and Girls, promoting the experiences and realities of the Black Brazilians on the international scenario, and connecting with Black women's movements in the Diasporas.
"It is time to form new quilombos
Wherever we are,
and may the future days come, save 2020
the Quilombola mystique persists stating:
"freedom is a constant struggle".
Text of the poem "É Tempo de Nos Aquilombar", by Conceição Evaristo (2020, Jornal O Globo)
